What will you learn?
Anthropology courses cover a range of different topics.
Students will learn about the wider world and how humans diversely experience living in this world. The courses will cover the links between global and local processes and between abstract theory and real behaviour. The course will equip students with sophistication in social theory and practical engagement with people in their lived contexts.
Many courses are catered for those who want to make the transition to studying Anthropology but have no previous experience or background in it.
Those involved in development and humanitarian aid who wish to add Anthropology to their expertise. They will learn holistic and critical approaches to culture, the inevitable context of all relief and development activity.
Anthropology research courses require considerable initiative on the part of the student to engage in independent, original scholarship. Students will be supported by the department through professional and specialist modules in academic research. As well as that, students will be mentored throughout their research.
Some courses are combined with forensics and human identification. Students will learn about the scientific study of human remains and identification from a historical, theoretical and practical perspective. The application of anthropological and diagnostic imaging methods in the analysis of the living and the dead will be considered.
Students will learn about basic human osteology and anatomical terminology used to describe the human body in the medical and scientific fields. The main scientific instruments and methods used in the business will be introduced. Understanding the strengths and limitations of these methods is crucial.
Many Anthropology courses are held on a part-time basis, either on the weekend or the evening. Some are held online or are a blend of both. They can last for a period of a few weeks or for a year. This means there will be a course to fit your needs and will fit around pre-existing work schedules or life commitments. There are also full-time courses available.
What career paths are available?
Anthropology can offer many paths to those looking to make a career out of it.
Students can go on to community work, education and health professions. They can also work in development projects, international aid and NGO work. Business, administration and product design is also a viable route for those interested in anthropology.
They can also go on to further study in Anthropology in areas of interest in the field. They can progress to higher levels of education and move up from a diploma to Bachelor’s Degree and beyond.
