Bus Éireann Apprentice Recruitment Programme recruitment process
At Bus Éireann, you’ll find the recruitment process friendly, easy to use and designed to ensure quality. They use a number of assessments to predict your suitability for an apprenticeship. This includes online and supervised assessments and an interview. They require satisfactory references from your previous employers and finally a pre-employment medical examination and are especially welcoming female applicants.
Ready to come on board?
Have you:
- Reached at least 16 years of age, on or before 1 September 2020.
- A grade C/ Merit or higher at Ordinary Level in the following subjects in the one sitting of the Junior Certificate – Mathematics, English or Irish, Science* and two other subjects. (Grade D/Achieved or higher in higher level papers is acceptable) *If you have not obtained the required grade in Science, then Art Craft and Design, Home Economics, Materials Technology (Woodwork), Metalwork, Technical Graphics or Technology are acceptable.
- A grade D/6 or higher at Ordinary Level in the following subjects in the one sitting of the Leaving Certificate – Mathematics, English or Irish, Science Subject* and two other subjects. *Agricultural Science, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physics and Chemistry.

These apprenticeship positions are open to both male and female candidates. You will be trained to the highest possible technical standards and acquire, amongst many other skills, the ability to maintain the various systems associated with modern public service vehicles. This includes training on the various day to day repairs and preventative maintenance tasks, in addition to vehicle diagnostics/fault finding with some of the most advanced systems of its kind in place. Apprentices have achieved great success in the National Skills Competition over the years which is testament to the training they have received.
An apprenticeship comprises of seven phases, three off-the-job and four on-the job. During all of these phases you are assessed on a structured ongoing basis.
On-the-job training takes place with Bus Éireann during Phases 1 – 3 – 5 – 7. Off-the-job training is designated by SOLAS as follows:
- Phase 2: SOLAS Education and Training Board (ETB) Training Centre in Dublin, Cork or Waterford
- Phase 4: Department of Education and Skills – Athlone or Dublin IT
- Phase 6: Department of Education and Skills – Athlone or Dublin IT
