Dr. George Veletsianos is originally from Cyprus, but now lives in Victoria BC Canada, where he is a full Professor in the School of Education and Technology at Royal Roads University. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Innovative Learning and Technology and the Commonwealth of Learning Chair in Flexible Learning. Prior to his current appointment, he held faculty positions at the University of Texas at Austin (USA) and the University of Manchester (UK). Dr. Veletsianos is a former Fulbright scholar, and has received a D’Arcy McGee Beacon Fellowship, a BCcampus Open Education and Advocacy Fellowship, and an early-career fellowship from the EU Network of Excellence in Technology Enhanced Learning.

Dr. Veletsianos has been designing, developing, and evaluating digital learning environments for nearly 20 years. His research aims to understand and improve teaching, learning, and participation in digital learning environments. His interests center around learners’ and faculty experiences with online learning, flexible learning, networked scholarship, open education, and emerging pedagogical practices. His research aims to develop practical solutions to problems facing education, while also being critical of common assumptions and oft-repeated claims about the use of technology in education. His research often highlights the gaps, inequities, and variations that exist in the ways that academics and learners participate online.

 

Dr. Veletsianos wrote and/or edited six books, and has individually and collaboratively published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and reports. His latest book is Learning Online: The student experience (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2020). He has received grant funding from a number of organizations, including the Canada Research Chairs Program, Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, National Science Foundation, Commonwealth of Learning, European Union, National Geographic, and Swedish Knowledge Foundation.
