One out of every four job advertisements in the UK is seeking engineers, and this demand is projected to rise significantly by 2030, according to new research commissioned by EngineeringUK.
The commissioned report, conducted over the period from September 2021 to September 2022, highlights that 25% of all recruitment listings were related to engineering positions.
Moreover, the study highlights a specific surge in demand for civil engineers, with 10% of engineering job adverts specifically targeting individuals with civil engineering expertise. This data underscores the substantial demand within the civil engineering sector.
When analyzing the range of engineering vacancies, the report identifies that civil engineers earn the highest average salary (£44,992) among other engineering disciplines, second only to information and communications technology (ICT) specialists.
Rising Demand for Engineers in UK
Market analytics firm Lightcast, responsible for compiling the report, projects that the number of engineering jobs will increase from 6.1 million in 2021 to 6.26 million by the end of the decade.
Approximately one-third of these new positions are anticipated to emerge in the ICT and software fields, while civil engineering is predicted to account for around 10% or roughly 16,000 of the job openings.
The report also highlights the prevalence of sustainability skills in the engineering industry, with over 200,000 recruitment listings incorporating sustainability requirements. Over 10% of these listings included a job title categorized as “green.”
Within the realm of environment-focused roles, civil engineering dominated with an 18% share. Notably, geotechnical engineers, quantity surveyors, and principal engineers were the most frequently sought-after positions necessitating green skills.
