ACTIVATE with STAND – Dipping your Toes into Student Activism
Join STAND for a short introductory workshop in getting started in activism! We’ll unpack what student activism is and what it can be, how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can help us identify & take action on the causes we care about, and how STAND can support you to bring activism to YOUR campus – whether that be by joining campaigns, volunteering for STAND News, joining the Ideas Collective changemakers program or setting up your very own STAND Society on campus. This will be a short, interactive session.
About STAND
STAND celebrates the power of ordinary people to change the world. An initiative of Suas, STAND was set up in 2014 in response to the desire among students and young people in Ireland to learn more about justice and equality issues, and take action. Some of the many opportunities offered by STAND include:
- STAND Student Festival: annual film and art exhibition for students highlighting global justice issues.
- STAND Global Issues Course: part-time evening course for students who want to change the world
- STAND Ideas Collective: summer changemakers program helping students turn their ideas into solutions to the world’s problems
- STAND News – an online news magazine for students who are passionate about equality and justice
- 10,000 Students – awareness-raising campaigns run in partnership with USI
STAND Societies – student-led societies initiating their own global justice actions on campuses across IrelandAll of STAND’s activities share a common goal of supporting students to learn about and take action on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Workshop 2 : Wednesday 23rd March 3-4pm online
Concern Project Us, Digital World Café – Build a Better World
About Project Us
Project Us is a movement for change in Ireland, facilitated by Concern Worldwide and funded by Irish Aid. It is a space (online and off) for groups and communities to gather to discuss the global and local issues that matter to them, that distress them, that enrage them. More especially, the project explores how issues at local level connect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Project Us uses the World Café methodology, which is a simple, effective, and flexible format for hosting a large group dialogue. World Cafés are altered to meet a wide variety of needs. Specifics of context, numbers, purpose, location, and other circumstances are factored into each event’s unique invitation, design, and question choice. Our new online world cafés are based on the same principles and practices as our Project Us in-the-flesh sessions. These 5 components are: setting, welcome and introduction, small group rounds, questions and harvest. We may also use a design thinking exercise at the end to really get participants exploring tangible solutions.
Project Us is a high quality, focused programme of public engagement which is well linked to Concern Worldwides’s overseas programmes. Project Us cafés are a good framework to explore different development issues – with the SDGs used to explore different thematic areas.
