Course Description
Abnormal Psychology
The aim of this programme is to develop the students understanding of psychology from the perspective of atypical or abnormal development or behaviour.
This programme is an ECTS 10 credit Level 7 module from the BA (Honours) in Applied Social Studies (Professional Social Care).
This programme should not be considered as a complete programme in Psychology but an introduction to the subject with an emphasis on social and community care settings.
On completion of this programme, students should be able to:
Describe and analyse what causes psychological disorder problems and learning difficulties;
Describe the current treatments for psychological health problems;
Evaluate causes and therapies for challenging behaviour issues;
Reflect on teamwork and personal skills development through collaborative learning;
Critically review how the experiences of people with psychological health problems compare with the academic models of disorders;
Apply a social construction perspective to learning disability and mental health;
Describe the incidence, causes and societal response to suicide from a psychological perspective.
