Tutor: Elaine Metcalfe, Bsc. Education & Training, MA Modern Irish History, Dip. Life Coaching, Certified Train-the-Trainer, DTM
From the granting of Home Rule to the Home Rule Party under Redmond during the First World War, to ‘New Nationalism’ and the Peace Agreement in 1998, this course will examine the people and events that shaped Modern Irish History.
It will look at the circumstances leading up to the 1916 Rising, the emergence of Sinn Fein, the Irish Civil War, and the situation in the North as it developed from No Home Rule to a protectorate of Britain. Moreover, the famous Irish men and women who played a prominent role in the history of their time and who left an indelible legacy for years to follow, will be observed against the back- ground of the climate and conditions that created the circumstances which thrust them centre-stage in the political and social milieu of their era.
People such as Michael Collins, De Valera, Sam Carson, Margaret Thatcher, the Hungers Strikers, Bernadette Devlin, Martin McGuinness, Jack Lynch Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams – to name but a few and their contribution to Irish history, will be explored in detail on this course, in order to better understand the paths they took, all of which lead to where we are as a Nation today.
