Course Description
Irish History with Dr Claire Collins
Discover Ireland’s Landscape and the Stories That Shaped It
Ireland, famously known as the ‘Emerald Isle’ and the ‘Land of Saints and Scholars,’ boasts a rich history intertwined with its rolling hills, lush midlands, and mild climate. The bond between the land and its people runs deep, shaping Ireland’s unique identity.
In this 10-week course, we will explore how the Irish crafted the idea of a sacred landscape — a land infused with local legends and historical significance. Starting with the ancient concept of high kingship and the significance of the Hill of Tara, we’ll journey through Ireland’s medieval history up to the Celtic Revival in the early 20th century. A key focus of the course will be on how stories and folklore shape our perception of the environment, examining how the symbol of Ireland evolved in response to the Viking and Norman invasions.
