Course Description
Level 7 or Level 8 B.Ed Montessori Education (Part Time)
The level 7 (3 years) / level 8 (4 years) B.Ed in Montessori Education is designed for learners who wish to embark on a career in Montessori Education and Care (ECEC) for the child, birth to twelve years. It is a broad- based modular programme incorporating Montessori pedagogy and philosophy with the core knowledge and skills necessary to work in the early childhood sector.
The programme also provides training in business skills appropriate for those wishing to set up /manage a small business. Learners are required to complete a significant practicum (500 hours over the three year programme), in relevant settings.
Graduates of this course can work or own their own Montessori or Early Years settings. Should graduates of the Level 8 B.Ed (Hons) wish to become a Primary educator, they can then go on to study a PME at another institution.

Course Time | Full time provision is between the hours of 9 to 5 in our new College campus in Dun Laoghaire. Part time provision is delivered through a blend of online learning classes two evenings a week and some on campus Saturday workshops. i.e. Thursday evening 6-9pm, Friday evening 6-9pm, Saturday 9:30am-4:30pm |

Entry Requirements | Applicants to this programme must meet normal HETAC/QQI requirements for entry to a level 7 or level 8 programme as follows: Level 7: O6 or H7 or above in 5 subjects which must include maths and English. Level 8: H5 or above in 2 higher level subjects AND a minimum of 4 O6s at ordinary level which must include maths and English. •Applicants with qualifications above a Level 5 certificate may apply under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning, (RPEL), and are considered on a case by case basis. Please note the application of RPL or RPEL does not reward the merit of Advanced Entry automatically. •Applicants wishing to apply to the course using RPL and or RPEL must inform the College at the time of application. RPL must be submitted within the application itself, while the RPEL submission is to accompany the application. RPEL submissions are to be emailed to mackenzie.young@smsi.ie. |
Carear Path | Graduates of this programme can work in Early Years or Montessori settings. This programme is approved by the Qulifications Advisory Board of the DCEDIY. This means that graduates of this programme can work as room leaders and managers in early years settings leading to increased minimum pay levels aas per the recently published Employement Regulation Order. Early years settings employing graduates of the programme can claim additional funding through the core funding mechanism. Graduates of the Level 8 B.Ed Honours can progress to the PME thereafter (at another institution) to become a Primary teacher. |
