What to Wear on a meditation course?
Wear loose, modest clothing for your class. You should be comfortable, but tight clothing may impact your ability to breath, so be check the fit of your clothing. Consider wearing layers as well. This lets you remove a jacket, sweater, hoodie as you progress through the class.
Depending on the medication class and its location, there may be a dress code. Or you may be outside. So check when you sign up for the class so you are prepared.
You may be asked to remove your shoes. So make sure you are wearing shoes and possibly socks that you are comfortable removing in class.
What to Bring
Depending on the class, you may need a yoga or meditation mat to sit on while you meditate.
Primarily just bring yourself and your readiness for a calming, strengthening experience. But you may also want a yoga mat. You should also have some water to stay hydrated.
What to Expect
Meditation increases awareness and promotes mindfulness. Arrive a little early to get acclimated to the room and people. Make sure you have time to drop some of the stress you may have when you walk into a new environment.
Expect to have some thoughts. Many people go into a meditation class thinking they will completely clear their mind. However, you learn to focus your thoughts and increase awareness.
Don’t expect to be a pro after one class. The benefits develop over time.
The room may have a moderate light level or be free of shadows if natural light is used. It may also be cool because your body is more relaxed at cooler temperatures.
There may be little or no furniture, but some pillows, cushions, floor chairs may be available to promote comfort during meditation.
There may be some ventilation to get fresh air into the room. There also may be a scented candle or soothing music may be in the room to promote positive energy, thoughts and feelings.
Your posture impacts your ability to meditate. You may be sitting on a mat, cushion or floor chair to reduce pressure on your spine and have your arms and legs relaxed.
Your breathing is important to the process. You may be asked to take deep breaths to facility focus and mindfulness
You may feel like falling asleep. So consider the time of day you take the class, the meals you eat before class, and other factors such as lack of sleep that may be causing your sleepiness.
At the end of the session, there may be a closing ritual to return your mind and back from its meditative state.
